Koi Fish Care

Koi fish are an informal group of the colored variants of the species c. Carpio, koi fish distinguish in a variation of colors, patterns, and escalation.

The most popular category of koi fish is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku and Showa Sanshoku varieties.

Setting up a koi fish's aquarium

Koi fish can grow up to 36 inches, keep the mature koi fish in an outdoor pond of at least 3 ft deep.

 With at least 50 gallons of water per koi fish, young koi fish should be kept indoors in an aquarium of at least 29 gallons. 

Put the aquarium in a quiet, peaceful area out of direct sunlight and drafts, that way your koi fish will feel safe.

How do you keep your koi fish healthy?

If your outdoor koi fish do not seem to be eating when it is winter, do not worry, koi fish stop eating at temperatures below 40 °F. But if it is not wintering then you should consult a veterinarian! If your koi fish is swimming in an unusual pattern, if it is getting thinner and eats less, it gets discolored skin or fins,  or scraping its body against rocks something is definitely wrong with your koi fish!

Transferring koi fish to another aquarium

To transfer a new koi fish to another aquarium, it is recommended to float the koi fish in the new water inside their bag for 10 minutes so that they can acclimate to the new water temperature.

If you are introducing your koi fish to a new aquarium or pond, quarantine the new fish in a separate mass of water for 2 – 4 weeks to make sure that they are in perfect condition. On the day you are going to move the koi fish, you should use a net to transfer the koi so that none of the old water mixes with the new water. It could be contaminated or with infections.

Filtration

If you are keeping your koi in an aquarium, your filter should be able to process all of the water in the tank 3 – 5 times an hour. Add beneficial bacteria supplements to help break down waste in the habitat such as- microbe lift koi pond clarifier beneficial bacteria.

Water Temperature

Koi fish can resist different temperatures, they can hibernate under the ice in winter. Just be sure that your pond is 3 ft deep otherwise it could freeze solid, they are not tough enough to resist being very close to the cold surface.

If your fish are living indoors, koi fish prefer cool water between 65-75 °F.
